Arrangements, assistance available to help customers stay connected this spring
Rosemount – Minnesota Energy Resources is encouraging customers who have fallen behind on natural gas bills to make arrangements to catch up before Minnesota's Cold Weather Rule period ends April 15. Customers carrying significant past-due balances who have not set up a payment arrangement are at risk of disconnection starting the third week of this month.
Customers having difficulty paying natural gas bills can contact Minnesota Energy Resources throughout the year at 800-889-9508 for help managing past-due amounts. Customer service representatives can discuss a minimum payment option or payment arrangement that may be available to help customers stay connected. Bill messages, mail notices and phone calls are being provided to customers at risk of disconnection to inform them about the status of their accounts.
Customers also are reminded they may be able to receive energy assistance through Minnesota's Energy Assistance Program (EAP), administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. There is no charge to determine eligibility or apply for assistance. More information about energy assistance through the EAP can be found on the Department of Commerce website or by calling 800-657-3710. Customers who receive an EAP grant may also qualify for assistance through Minnesota Energy Resources' Gas Affordability Program, administered by the Salvation Army.
Minnesota Energy Resources urges customers to be alert for scam attempts that can occur at this time of year. Common scams feature criminals threatening to disconnect a customer if an immediate payment is not made, often with a prepaid card (e.g., MoneyPak or Green Dot card). Minnesota Energy Resources reminds customers it never conducts business in a threatening manner, and does not require a specific payment type to pay natural gas bills. Disconnection is always a last resort only taken after all other attempts to work with a customer have been unsuccessful.
